The Advanced Instructor course provides additional training for instructors who wish to teach the advanced awards such as National Lifeguard, Standard First Aid and Boat Operator Accredited Training. The course covers: principles of planning; teaching adults; methods of presentation; how to use audio-visual aids; running a course including evaluation procedures and guidelines for apprentices.

Prerequisite: Lifesaving Instructor certification.

Evaluation & certification: Instructor Trainers evaluate and certify Advanced Instructor candidates.

Candidate recognition: Certification card.

Recertification: Advanced Instructor certification is good for life and need not be recertified.

Examination Standards Clinic: Approx. 8 hr. classroom and water time. The Examination Standards Clinic (ESC) focuses on the evaluation of the Bronze medal awards and Emergency First Aid. The ESC may be run as a stand-alone clinic or attached to other instructor training programs.

Reference materials required: Canadian Lifesaving Manual, Award Guides, Examiner Training Records: Bronze Cross/Distinction, or National Lifeguard, or First Aid/AED/Airway Management/Advanced First Aid.

Co-examinations: Examiner candidates co-examine with experienced Examiners at the levels to which they seek Examiner appointment. The number of co-examinations required is at the discretion of the Area Chair. A minimum of 2 is common.

Area Chair approval: The Society appoints examiners only with the approval of the Society's Area Chairs.
