Water Polo Begins Tomorrow Night!!

Water polo begins Wednesday, June 20, 2018
Junior Water Polo: 7-8 pm. Ages 9 - 15. If anyone under the age of 9 wants to participate they may only do so at the discretion of the head guard.
Adult Water Polo: 8-9 pm. Ages 16 and up. If anyone under the age of 16 wants to participate they may only do so at the discretion of the head guard.
Water polo will run every Wednesday night during the season for 1 hour.
Participants will be divided into two even teams and play.
Red benches will be turned over on either end of the pool and teams are attempting to score a point by hitting the red bench with the soccer ball.
After 30 minutes of play teams will switch defensive ends of the pool so that both have an equal amount of time in the shallow end and deep end.
Members are encouraged to bring guests to play water polo. $5.00 per guest. Guests must be accompanied by a member.

OPENING DAY IS HERE!

The 2018 swim season begins tomorrow, Saturday, May 19, 2018 and as of today the pool is a balmy 82 degrees! Adult swim begins at 12:00 pm and Family swim begins at 1:00 pm. Please see the full schedule posted below for further times and details.

As you know, until this past week, Fairfields had no running water and we had to hire a plumber to fix some damaged pipes from the winter. Well, I am happy to report that the water is now running. The showers are also up and running but still need some maintence done on them so they are currently running cold. The plumber will be returning shortly to correct this for us.

Don't forget to mark your calendar for our Community Open House & BBQ on Saturday, June 2, 2018. This event is for members and non-members. Further details as to how you can register and volunteer will be emailed out soon.

This year we are offering you the ability to pay 2017 season rates if you renew and pay by January 31st, 2017. If you know you are going to be renewing your membership, this is a great way to save some money this season as historically our annual dues increase by approximately 5%. As a member owned and operated facility we rely heavily on members to volunteer for a variety of roles including joining the Board of Directors. The pool cannot operate without a Board of Directors who ensure that the pool is operational, that we have lifeguards and an amazing level of programming included as part of Membership!

Sadly, we currently don't have some of our vital roles filled for the 2018 season at this time. At this point, we don't have 3 valuable board roles covered for this upcoming season (Treasurer, Staffing & Facility). We also need people to cover the majority of the Coordinator positions for 2018. At this point we are continuing to plan for the upcoming season and will continue to do so until we are unable to move forward any further without those integral roles filled. Once we reach that place, all business at Fairfields will be suspended until a time when we do have those positions filled. Ideally we will have all Board & Coordinator positions filled to help disperse the workload of running a pool.

This will seriously affect all programming, staffing, current & future grant applications and the operation and potential opening of the pool this spring. We would also have to look at options to hire someone to run the day to day business of the pool. Of course, if this is the route we take the annual dues will increase dramatically.

Participating on the Board of Directors doesn’t need to be a full-time job (especially if all of the Board and support positions are filled!). However, often board members do spend a fair bit more time than a member who is not on the board. To account for this the members voted in favour that Annual Dues be refunded to Very Active Board Members (those that contribute over 100 hours of valuable service to Fairfields Swimming Club).

We have provided links that briefly outlined the positions below and we ask that you seriously consider helping out so that we can ensure the pool operates next year! If you have any questions or want more details on specific roles please contact at president@fairfieldsswimmingclub.com.

Pool Hours & Water Polo

Please note that the pool is now closing at 8.30pm for the remainder of the summer due to reduced daylight hours.

It is also water polo night at Fairfields. Due to the earlier closing, the Jr. Water Polo will run from 6.30pm-7.30pm and Adult (16+) Water Polo will run from 7.30pm-8.30pm for the remainder of the season. If you haven't come out for a game yet season, why not swing by tonight! Guests are welcome for a fee of $5.00 per person.

PA Day in Peel - Pool is Opening Early!

Dear Members,

It's another super hot day out today and I just found out it was a PA day in Peel. I have arranged for a couple of guards to come in earlier today so we can open the pool at 12.30pm. I know it's last minute, but if you are around and want to come for a swim, please do!

There is some concrete construction being done at the pool today - a ramp is being poured in the parking lot to the walkway, so please enter through the Christopher Road entrance. You are fine to park in the parking lot. Just be mindful of the contractors while you are there.

Dear Members,

The weather looks like it has finally turned for the better and we are still on track to open the pool this Saturday (June 10th) at noon. Just in time for a super hot spell coming this week-end. The pool is almost full and the heaters will be turned on later today.

There are many things that still need to get done before we open on Saturday at noon. If you want to get some volunteer hours in, here is your opportunity. You can also get a sneak peak at the pool before we open by volunteering now. This list will be updated daily online as items are completed and things are found that need to be added. We have guards there working on these tasks from 4pm-8pm daily. If you would prefer to come before this, please let us know and we can arrange for you to be able to get in.

Any expenses incurred will be reimbursed. Please verify that we do not have the items you are purchasing before you buy them. If you are coming to do yard & garden work, please bring your own tools as we don't have many at the pool right now.

Put down sod (talk to Dan Keenliside)
Organize shed in the pool area
- pull out all office stuff and go through it and dispose of items we don't need.
- put office stuff neatly in girls washroom for now.
- Space needs to be made to put the pool cover in here.
- This area should be for pool related items, i.e. chemicals
Organize shed in the yard. This area should have all of the city garbage cans, tables, BBQ’s and lawn related equipment. If it doesn’t fit, let me know and we can reassess.
Remove garbage bags & cans from deck
-          move to side yard shed area (on the North side of the shed)
-          Remove old bulletin board for garbage
-          Remove broken table for garbage
-          Remove circular tube for garbage
Dump run as we have a LOT of garbage to dispose of
Garbage pickup through your entire site (pool deck, parking lot and yard).
Mow & edge the grass, including the ditch on Christopher Road and the boulevard on Clarkson Road
Trim bushes around deep end sign so that it is fully visible
- Brown bag or tie all yard waste
Trim bushes in parking lot, north pool side and along Christopher to be even and manicured
- Brown bag or tie all yard waste
Remove all broken branches from hedges
Purchase and deliver blue paint for the building (expenses will be reimbursed)
Purchase bathroom items and deliver to the pool (toilet paper, paper towels, etc.)
Paint blue wall
Put out bike racks
Power spray deck
Sweep parking lot

OTF 150 Construction & Pool Opening Update

Dear Fairfields Members,

I hope you were able to get outside and enjoy this rare nice day today. We are really looking forward to the upcoming season and are so happy that we have received the Ontario Trillium Foundation 150 grant to do some much needed repairs and upgrades on our pool. The Board of Directors have been working tirelessly with our contractors to get the work done before opening. If you have come by the pool, you may have noticed some of the work that has been done already.

Due to the ridiculously wet spring that we have had, all construction has been delayed. Unfortunately, this means that we will not be able to open on our scheduled date of May 20th. We are currently about 2 -3 weeks behind schedule. We were really hoping that we might get a chance to catch up, but when looking at the upcoming weather forecast, we don't believe that will be possible. Again, due to the weather, some of the work we wanted to have done prior to opening has now been moved to the fall so that we can still open the pool during the warmer months. We are aiming to keep the pool open later in September if we have guards that are able to work.

We will keep you updated on progress and the date of opening. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Please note that all renewals not completed and paid for by April 15, 2017 have now been assessed a $50.00 late fee. If you have mailed your cheque to the post office box and it is postmarked on or before April 15, 2017 the late fee will be reversed. If you have not yet mailed in your annual dues and post-dated volunteer cheque and you would like to drop them off by tomorrow (April 18, 2017) by 7.00pm, we will also waive the late fee.

Please contact us to find out where you can drop them off to avoid the late fee. DO NOT take them to Turtle Creek Postal Outlet as they will then put them in the mail and this offer will not be valid for you.

Changes at Fairfields

If you happen to pass by the pool this week you will notice the start of some exciting changes. These are possibly largely due to the hard work of our volunteers who successfully applied for and were subsequently awarded funding from Ontario150 for capital improvements.

The Pool Medics will be on site between March 27/2017 and March 31/2017 to drain and clean the outdoor swimming pool in preparation for the restoration.

Restoration work on the skimmers, main drain and returns will be done between April 3/2017 and April 14/2017 -weather permitting.

BIG news, BIG funding - find out what's coming to Fairfields in 2017

Fairfields Swimming Club secures Ontario150 Grant:

For 55+ years, Fairfields has been the vibrant hub of summers enjoyed in this fabulous community. During this time it’s always been the efforts and energy of our Members and Board that has kept our small club in the best condition possible while working within a tight operating budget.

For 2017, we’re ecstatic to announce we have secured a Ontario150 Community Capital Program grant in the amount of $250,000.

This much needed capital injection will fund infrastructure improvements at the pool for the enjoyment, safety, comfort and care of all members and guests. Our 8-month project will focus on improving and upgrading our aging outdoor swimming pool and facility.

Here are the major projects we will be undertaking:

- Upgrading the plumbing for the water to both pools which will improve water quality and flow.

- Properly ventilating the basement to reduce the chemical corrosion of the equipment and providing a safer environment for our lifeguards.

- Resurfacing of the pool deck, bathrooms and guard office with rubber surfacing - a safer and more aesthetically pleasing option.

- Sandblasting of our pool interior. We will be removing all of the tiles and putting a higher quality coating on the pool so it will last longer.

- Replacing the existing fence to meet by-law codes and help to improve the aesthetics/comfort of our club.

- Full resurfacing of the parking lot.

- A permanent shade structure that will cover our typical viewing area.

In order to open on time and welcome you to the NEW Fairfields in the Spring, we’re jumping on works and moving forward now!

We’re sure the renovations and improvements will be warmly received by all current members as well as attracting many new members to our special community. We look forward to keeping you abreast of all the improvements that are underway!

Over the next couple of months the Board will be putting together some surveys to get your input for this season, last season feedback and reasons members are selling. These are important for us to help plan the upcoming year. We are also currently preparing our budget and fees for next year which will be available by the end of January.

I also wanted to let you know that we have not year heard back about the huge capital grant that we have applied for, but hope to hear whether we have received it or not by end of December. We will update you once we have learned of the final decision.

Volunteer openings

Dear Members,

We still need to fill some of the Volunteer Support roles this year. These roles do NOT require you to come to board meetings. It doesn’t matter if you don’t think you know what you are doing. We are here to guide you. We can keep things the same, or switch things up. The three main areas we still require help in are:

Social Coordinator

Grants Coordinator (researches and finds grants appropriate for Fairfields, coordinates with volunteers for grant writing or does it themselves)

Citi*Swim Coordinator

All of these roles are vital to programming & running of the pool. They are not intended to be roles that you are required to complete solely on your own. Ideally we will be able to create a team for each role.

Dear Members,

I wanted to thank those that attended our 2016 Annual General Meeting. We ended up with a larger than normal turn out and it was wonderful. Let’s see if we can get even more of you out next year!

Thankfully some previous Board Members and Volunteer Support Members have decided to stay on again this year to continue helping out at the pool. URGENT CALL FOR BOARD OF DIRECTORS - FINAL Event Reminder: 2016 Annual General Meeting

Sadly, we have had no interest from any members stepping up to join the Board for the 2017 season at this time. Tomorrow’s Annual General Meeting will still be held at 7:00PM. Near the end of the meeting, the 2016 Board of Directors will be dissolved. At that point if we do not have at least 4 members join the Board in the following positions, President/Communications, VP/Staffing, Treasurer & Secretary, all business at Fairfields will be suspended until a time when we do have those positions filled. Ideally we will have all 7 Board positions filled to help disperse the workload of running a pool.

This will seriously affect all programming, staffing, current & future grant applications and the operation and potential opening of the pool next spring. We would also have to look at options to hire someone to run the day to day business of the pool. Of course, if this is the route we take the annual dues will increase dramatically.

Save Our Pool - Important Information about the AGM

I hope that you all enjoyed the hot and sunny season this year at Fairfields as much as we did! It was great to see so many families out enjoying the pool to beat the heat. As we approach our Annual General Meeting next week and begin planning for next years season we need your help.

Several board members (myself included) have been on the Board for many years and will be stepping down for various reasons. We are reaching out today to ask for at least 4 members to join the Board or the pool will not be able to open next spring!!

Participating on the Board of Directors isn't a full-time job so it doesn't take up too much time (especially if all of the Board and support positions are filled!). This is a just a friendly reminder to ensure that you have recorded your volunteer hours online today (September 30, 2016) if you have not already done so. After today, cheques from members who have not completed and recorded their 5 hour requirement will be cashed, while all the others will be destroyed unless otherwise requested. Note that hours used to fulfill your yearly requirement cannot also be used by your son/daughter for their high school volunteer hours.

If you have signed up for the Fall Clean-Up or will be cutting grass throughout the month of October, you are able to register those hours now (2 hours per volunteer position) or e-mail us if you have any questions.

Pool Closing & Trillium Grant Application

Hi Members,

Due to the heat wave coming to an end and the guards school, sports, arts, etc., schedules, I just wanted to let you know that the pool will remain open until Tuesday evening at 8.00pm. Same week-day hours as last week, (4-8pm). As of Wednesday, September 14th, Fairfields will officially be closed for the 2016 year.

Thank you again for such an amazing season and especially to the guards that were able to help us out past our expected closing date - Chelsea Rodman, Evan Chatfield and Mackenize Ingram.

I'm sorry if I have not been able to reply to your e-mails lately, Francine Vance and I, with a few key others, have been working feverishly to finalize our application for a large grant from the Trillium Foundation (approx. $250K) and it is due this week. Once we have finalized our application, I will return all outstanding e-mails.

If you are one of the many people that have obtained quotes for us, can you please submit them to info@fairfieldsswimmingclub.com today. Even if you only have 1 of the 3 quotes obtained at this time, please just send that. We need to provide numbers or else that part of the process can not be included in the upgrades to the pool.

So you are all aware, the following is what we are looking to upgrade at the pool:

1. Update the pool’s plumbing and ventilation systems.
2. Resurfacing and repainting the pool and deck.
3. Replacing the fence with one that is safe and not easily climbed.
4. Replace our temporary shade structure with a permanent one.
5. Repairing the parking lot.

As always, please send me any questions, comments or concerns and I will get back to you later this week.

Also, a reminder that we will need board members for next year as 95% of our board has confirmed that they are retiring. We need you to keep the pool going!!

Dear Parents and Swimmers of the July 16, 2016 Citi*Swim meet,

Congratulations on your first Citi*Swim meet this season! Everyone did very well!! If you haven`t received your ribbon(s) as yet, please see Chelsea R.

Although the meet was held at the Lewis-Bradley Pool in Clarkson, the meet was hosted by Frank McKechnie Pool. Among other things, the host pool is responsible for recording the results of each event (male and female: butterfly, back, breast, freestyle according to age; and mixed relays) and awarding ribbons to swimmers that placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in the events.

Unfortunately, the ribbons awarded to Fairfield swimmers that we received from Frank McKechnie only indicate the name of the swimmer stapled to a 1st, 2nd or 3rd ribbon. – we have no idea what ribbon goes with what event, nor do we know the swimmer’s time. I talked to Heather MacNeil of Frank McKechnie and asked her to provide me with a spreadsheet or even a handwritten account of swimmer name, pool name, and time of those that placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd so that I would be able to match up the ribbons we received with the events and report that information to you. Heather apologized that the ribbons did not indicate event and time. She admitted that the record keeping was not done particularly well for this first meet and that it would be much better for the remaining meets (on a go forward basis ribbons will show name, event and time). She didn`t sound very optimistic about providing me with any further event information; however, she does has my contact information in case she does track down more information. If I receive anything further from Frank McKechnie, I will let you know.

Hi everyone,

I don't think I'm the only one that enjoys a cup of coffee (or many!) to get the gears turning in the morning.

As we have kicked off our third block of lessons this week, please remember that our "No Food or Drink (other than water)" on the pool deck applies to kids and adults alike.

That includes your Grande Half Soy Caramel Latte Machiatto or Go Cup from home as well unfortunately!

We're happy to report our members have been doing great with keeping food and drink off the pool deck lately and this is just a small heads up for coffee and similar drinks particularly in the morning hours and at our lessons.

Safe swimming at Fairfields is essential. It only takes a simple accident to possibly turn to tragedy. Our guards are well trained in all aspects of guarding and actively improve their skills outside of guarding hours throughout the summer.

In 2015/16, Fairfields was fortunate to secure a government grant that enabled us to hire more guards for summer 2016. This has meant increased coverage, staff to swimmer ratios and even better service and attention.

A Great Source of Club Information

If you have a question, please always feel free to ask a lifeguard. If they don't have the answer, they'll be able to direct you to the right person or send on your inquiry to get an answer. If you see something around the pool that you feel needs attention, please mention it to a guard to be addressed immediately or forwarded on.

Teachers and Heroes to our Young Ones

Our members with kids rave about the small classes sizes and rapid improvement in their child's swimming. We actively encourage kids and members alike to interact with and enjoy some fun with our guards - it's another part of what makes Fairfields so great!

Online Report Cards for Lessons

Lesson report cards will be available online on Fridays at the end of each session for your child. All of the Bronze level examinations will be done in class on the last Friday of your session. These report cards will not be available online until Monday evening. The instructor will be informing each child if they have completed their level or if they should be repeating the same level at the end of their class. This system will retain your childs report card for years to come. You will be able to view your childs report card by clicking here.

Guests Policy at Fairfields Swimming Club - Honour System

Hi Members,

As a board we have noticed the ‘honour-system’ on which the pool is based, has started being abused quite frequently. We have had a fair number of incidents where a member is bringing a guest and claiming that they are a member to avoid paying the guest fees. When addressed by the staff some members are denying that they have guests with them or pretending that they are someone in the family. We have also had a few incidents where non-members are trying to get into the pool without a member present.

Please take a few moments to review our FAQ’s about bringing Guests to Fairfields:

Can members bring a guest?

Yes. A fee of $5.00 per guest per day will apply and MUST be paid to the guards (correct change or small bills would be appreciated). Guest passes are available in booklets of 10 for $40.00 and can be purchased from any Director or at the pool office. Although we welcome your friends to the pool, please keep in mind our rules to ensure everyone enjoys themselves. All guests must be accompanied by a Member in good standing. Please ensure that when you bring a guest to the pool to notify the guards upon entering of any disability or medical conditions that may require their attention. All guests intending to swim in the deep end are also required to take a deep end test when they go to the pool by asking the lifeguard on duty to perform this test.

My guest isn't swimming, do I have to pay a guest fee?

Yes. All guests must pay the guest fee whether they are swimming or not.

Our chief caregiver is bringing our kids to the pool, can the caregiver bring their children or other guests with them?

No. Only a member that is 10 and over can purchase & use guest passes for their membership. Chief caregivers are not able to purchase or use guest passes. Any exceptions to this rule must be discussed with the head lifeguard and the board of directors in advance.

What is a chief caregiver?

A chief caregiver is someone that will be looking after your child(ren) regularly when you are not at the pool. Typical examples of this are nannies, mother's helper, grandparents, etc. There is no guest fee for a chief caregiver when bringing the member children to the pool, however, they must be listed on your membership form at the time of registration, renewal or when this information changes. A chief caregiver does not have access to the facility when not acting in that capacity.

When you come to the pool, ensure that you identify yourselves to the guard that will be sitting at the front desk when you walk in. The guards will then review your membership details. You will still need to sign in to the visitor book and if you are purchasing a guest pass for a non-member, both the member & guest must be present while it is being purchased. Please ensure you review any disability or medical conditions that your guest may have that could require the guards attention. All guests intending to swim in the deep end are also required to take a deep end test when they go to the pool by asking the lifeguard on duty to perform this test.

Please help to enforce the rules of the pool and if you notice any abuse of the pool, feel free to contact me directly.

Monday Night Lessons Start Tonight (June 20)

Please note that Monday night lessons start tonight (June 20, 2016).

Adult lessons will begin tonight starting at 5:45 PM - 6:30 PM. Adults not enrolled in lessons are still welcome to use the pool during adult swim times (5:30 PM - 6:30 PM) as these lessons will not use the entire pool.

Monday night lessons for the kids will run from 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM. As the kids lessons do take up the entire pool, there will be no family swim running for the next two weeks on Monday evenings. Starting on July 4th, the pool will remain open until 9:00 PM and families are welcome to come and swim for the last 30 minutes of the day if you wish.

Due to the weather forecast this evening, I wanted to remind you that lessons will run rain or shine. In the event that lightning or thunder is present in or around the area, Fairfields will immediately close the pool. The pool will remain closed until 30 minutes past the last visible lightning strike or episode of thunder.

As you are aware, each family is responsible for completing 5 or more volunteer hours in order for your volunteer deposit cheque not to be cashed. We strongly recommend starting your volunteer hours early in the season to ensure you are able to complete these. We do not offer a credit for partial volunteer hours.

There are many opportunities over the season to help out at Fairfields Swimming Club. Volunteer opportunities are updated on our website regularly. We need help with everything from Administration to Maintenance to everything in between. We are looking for members to step up and take a role in the pool by contributing quality time and services.

Synchronized Swimming Registration is Online Now!

Synchronized swimming is a hybrid form of swimming, dance and gymnastics, consisting of swimmers (either solos, duets, or teams) performing a synchronized routine of elaborate moves in the water, accompanied by music. Synchronized swimming demands advanced water skills, and requires great strength, endurance, flexibility, grace, artistry and precise timing, as well as exceptional breath control when upside down underwater.

Dates: June 29 - August 21, 2015
Monday through Friday
No synchro on statutory holidays.

This year we are combining both junior and senior synchro teams because of lower turnout in 2015. If there is a large number of registrations then we will split the team into separate groups.

Ages: 6 - 18
**If under 6 years of age a decision to participate in synchro can be made at the discretion of the instructors.

This program is not to be used on a drop in basis, weekly attendance is expected. We will be preforming at the annual Regatta (August 28, 2016) as well as possible extra performances to occur throughout the summer.

If you are on vacation throughout the summer but intend to come to practices regularly, please e-mail us or speak with the instructors directly to ensure your child will be in attendance enough to learn the final routine.

Citi*Swim is a team oriented introduction to competitive swimming. It offers the opportunity to learn skills and improve fitness for youth. By belonging to a team, each person enjoys learning to swim faster by challenging themselves to improve personal best times in swim meets. Citi*Swim is based upon the values of fair play and allows each swimmer an opportunity to contribute to their team. The program includes stroke and skill improvement and physical training. Participants should be able to efficiently swim one length of the pool. Citi*Swim practices are held every weekday (Monday to Friday) for a total of 3.75 practice hours a week. Swim meets held on selected weekends during the summer. Come out and join the team.

Please note that there is a $10.00 fee for each meet you register to attend.

Thunder & Lightning Policy

Fairfields will require immediate closure of the pool in the event that lightning or thunder is present in or around the area. The pool will remain closed until 30 minutes past the last visible lightning strike or episode of thunder. The guards will write the time that they last heard/saw the event and the time that the pool reopen on the white board by the guards office.

Applying Sunscreen

You should put on sunscreen at least 1/2 an hour before arriving at the pool and to shower before entering the water. Sunscreen and foreign matter do not mix well with the hot and sunny weather. They in fact promote the growth of algae and help the pool to go cloudy. When this happens we are sometimes forced to close the pool in order to fix the problem.

Showering

All swimmers must take a soapy shower before entering or re-entering the pool. There is soap in both change rooms for you to use.

Food & Drink Policy

No food or drink is permitted on pool deck at anytime. Bottled water will be the only exception. There are picnic benches in the yard for you to enjoy snacks and picnics at.

Chelsea Andreou	Hi Fairfields, my name is Chelsea and this will be my first year working for this facility as an assistant aquatics coordinator! I've been working in aquatics for seven years and I can't wait to get to know all of you this summer. I'm going into the last year of my undergrad at the University of Guelph for Psychology and am originally from Vancouver. I love being outdoors, active and being around great people! Catherine Blais	Hi friends! My name is Catherine but you can call me Cat! This will be my second year working at Fairfieds and I am so excited to be back! I am currently working towards my double major in both French and English, graduating from McMaster University spring of 2017. Once I graduate from Mac, I hope to go to teachers college and kick-start my career as an elementary school teacher. The 2016 annual dues have been set and are listed below depending on your membership level.

$535.00 - Family Membership
$445.00 - Adult Only Membership
$405.00 - Loyalty Membership

Your annual fees cover life guards salary, facility & pool maintenance, swimming lessons, club programs and other expenses (e.g. taxes, utilities, insurance).

Members have the choice of completing 5 hours of volunteer service, or paying an additional $175.00 fee. If you know you will not be completing your volunteer hours this year and want to pay for your volunteer fees with your membership dues, you can opt to pay only $150.00 by April 15, 2016. Please note that if you choose the $150.00 prepaid option, it is not refundable if you do complete your hours.

The 2016 Membership Renewal Package is available online and should be completed and payment made by April 15, 2016 to avoid a $50 late fee. Payments can be made online through PayPal or mailed in by cheque or money order. Once your renewal has been completed and paid for you will be able to sign your children up for lessons.

Final reminder to record your volunteer hours

This is a friendly reminder that you are required to have completed and recorded your 5 volunteer hours by September 30, 2015to not have to pay the $175.00 volunteer fee.

If you have completed these volunteer hours, please ensure that you record your volunteer hours online today (September 30, 2015). After that date, cheques from members who have not completed their 5 hour requirement will be cashed, while all the others will be destroyed unless otherwise requested. Note that hours used to fulfill your yearly requirement cannot also be used by your son/daughter for their high school volunteer hours.

If you have signed up for the Fall Clean-Up or will be cutting grass throughout the month of October, you are able to register those hours now (2 hours per volunteer position) or e-mail us if you have any questions.

Last Day of Our Summer Season

Another amazing season has come to an end at Fairfields Swimming Club. Sadly, today is the last day of our summer season. We are open from 12:00 - 7:30pm. Let's finish off our summer strong!!! We hope that you all have had a great summer and have enjoyed all of the activities at the pool. A huge thank you to our 2015 board, all of our volunteers and our lifeguards that made another great summer poolside possible.

Today's schedule is:

While at the pool today, please ensure that you check the lost and found box (located under the sign-in desk). Note that any items unclaimed after Labour Day will be donated.

Motion to Waive Annual Dues for Board Members in 2016

Dear Members,

As you know, Fairfields Swimming Club is owned and run by it’s members. This means that volunteers are required to run and maintain the club. While the number of volunteers has declined in recent years, others have stepped up and contributed significant services to Fairfields Swimming Club. The Board recognizes and appreciates these efforts that are essential to keep the pool running both physically and administratively. The efforts of these volunteers is essential to our success and is greatly appreciated. Without their efforts, we would be required to pay for additional services.

Therefore, the 2015 Board of Directors will be recommending to the 2016 Board of Directors that the Volunteer Fee be increased to $250. This is recommended to encourage volunteering while providing the alternative of contributing funds to hire external parties to complete tasks that we don’t have volunteers for.

The Board of Directors is also essential to the organization and most of their services cannot be outsourced. The Board of Directors takes on additional responsibilities and is accountable to the membership. In order to encourage and motivate participation on the Board of Directors and to recognize the increased amount of time dedicated by board members and the responsibility that is imposed upon them, the 2015 Board of Directors will be presenting the following Motion at the November 2015 Annual General Meeting. Note that at the end of this meeting the 2015 Board of Directors will resign and a new Board of Directors will be elected for 2016.

We are advising you now so that you can be prepared to vote at the meeting or by proxy in advance of the Meeting. This is also an excellent time for you to consider being nominated for the 2016 Board of Directors. Please contact any of our 2015 Board members to discuss what is involved.

MOTION TO BE PRESENTED AT THE 2015 AGM: I move that Annual Dues be waived for Very Active Board Members commencing in 2016. A Very Active Board Member is to be defined as an Officer or Director of the Board of Directors that has contributed over 75 hours of valuable service to Fairfields Swimming Club. The Board of Directors for that year will determine (by majority vote) whether any Board Member has not contributed over 75 hours of valuable service to Fairfields Swimming Club, in which case that member’s Annual Dues will be payable in full.

While no action is required at this time, we are sending this e-mail now for your consideration so that all members have an opportunity to ask questions or submit comments and be prepared to submit a vote for the 2015 AGM.

Volunteers are required to complete the following tasks. If we do not have volunteers to do this work, we will be required to hire people to do this work which will result in an increase in Annual Fees and/or Volunteer Fees:

hedge trimming
weeding, especially along the parking lot
trim tree along the sidewalk from the parking lot
Also, a volunteer coordinator is required, especially to organize volunteers to run the annual regatta, yard work, and the fall clean up.

Fairfields Swimming Club is administered by a volunteer board of directors and relies heavily on its volunteer program to plan social events and help maintain the pool property. Fairfields Volunteer Program was created to maintain our Club's community atmosphere and facilities, and to help keep our expenses at a minimum.

A minimum of 5 volunteer hours are required by each family per season. If volunteer hours are not completed and reported the family is responsible for a fee of $175.00.

You must register each child for each meet they will be attending. Fairfields will be charging each swimmer $5.00 per meet they register to attend. Please note that we are unable to accept anyone at the meet that has not registered and paid by the Thursday prior to the meet at 1.00pm as we need to register with the city by that day. To register please print off this form and return it to your child's coach with payment or register and pay online.

Time Trials for Citi*Swim

Supervision during Lessons & Programming

Parents are to ensure that there is someone at the pool responsible to care for their child under 10. The lifeguards are not there to babysit. They are guarding the pool or instructing. Parents need to be advised that if their child needs attention (ie., crying, cold, sick, not wanting to participate, etc.) we do not have a caregiver on site to attend to the child’s needs.

Food & Drinks

No food or drink is permitted on pool deck at any time. Bottled water will be the only exception.

Safety Drills

This summer, drills will occasionally be conducted by the lifeguards as a part of their training during fun swim. Like fire drills, it is important to know what to do in an emergency at the pool. One long blast of the whistle indicates that the pool must be cleared. Please remember to stay calm at all times and follow any directions given by the lifeguards as quickly as possible. Members may be recruited for tasks such as crowd control. If you hear two short blasts of the whistle, please look to the nearest guard for further instruction.

Sunscreen Application & Showering

As the weather is (finally) starting to warm up, we would like to remind you that sunscreen should be applied at least 1/2 an hour before entering the the pool. Please also ensure to shower before entering the water. Sunscreen and foreign matter do not mix well with the hot and sunny weather. They in fact promote the growth of algae and help the pool to go cloudy.

Citi*Swim Prerequisites

Parking Lot being Sealed - NEED FOR VOLUNTEERS

The City of Mississauga & Pacific Paving have agreed to apply a sealer to the parking lot at no cost to Fairfields Swimming Club in the coming weeks. As we don't have an exact timeline for when this will be starting, we are searching for lots of volunteers to come out and start to weed and remove the grass from the parking lot cracks. Please sign-up online or just come out to the pool and start chipping away at this project. We really do need as many people as possible to complete this task.

Fairfields will require immediate closure of the pool in the event that lightning or thunder is present in or around the area. The pool will remain closed until 30 minutes past the last visible lightning strike or episode of thunder.

Citi*Swim Registration is Online Now

Citi*Swim

Citi*Swim is a team oriented introduction to competitive swimming. It offers the opportunity to learn skills and improve fitness for youth. By belonging to a team, each person enjoys learning to swim faster by challenging themselves to improve personal best times in swim meets. Citi*Swim is based upon the values of fair play and allows each swimmer an opportunity to contribute to their team. The program includes stroke and skill improvement and physical training. Participants should be able to efficiently swim one length of the pool. Citi*Swim practices are held every weekday (Monday to Friday) with swim meets held on selected weekends during the summer. Come out and join the team. Please note that there is a fee for each meet you commit to attending.

Spring Clean-Up

We’re looking forward to a fun season and are currently seeking volunteers to help prepare for the pool opening on Saturday, May 16th. Get your volunteer hours completed early by participating in our spring clean up day.

We are looking for a family to run this event. A list of tasks will be provided for you. If you are willing to be the go-to person at this event, please note that in your registration.
Come lend a hand getting our gardens clean, weeded, lawns raked, clubhouse ready to go, painting completed, etc.

Please arrive at the pool with general cleaning supplies, gardening tools and toolbox tools (e.g. gloves, cleaning rags, spray cleaners, rakes, pruners, a power washer if you have one, screw drivers etc.) to help get the pool ready to open in a few weeks.
We will not be trimming the hedges at this time unless they have flowered.

BABYSITTING WILL BE PROVIDED

Pizza will be provided at no cost to you, so that you can participate in this important Annual General Meeting. Please RSVP so we are able to have enough pizza for all of the kids and to ensure we have the proper number of babysitters for the kids attending. If there isn't enough interest, there is a possibility that this will be canceled.

NEW 2015 BOARD OF DIRECTORS REQUIRED:

We encourage you to come out and voice your opinion on the running of your Club. Show your interest and enthusiasm in keeping Fairfields going for another 50 years, and exercise your voting rights. There is one vote per membership in good standing. Sublets are unable to vote.

Fairfields is operated by a Board of Directors consisting of 7 members. Every year these positions are voted in by our membership at the AGM. Fresh faces and ideas are essential to making Fairfields the best that it can be for our community.

For 2015 we desperately need Directors to take charge of Staffing, Membership, Treasurer, Secretary, Facility Maintenance and Water Maintenance. Other positions and volunteer opportunities are also available and needed.
